The Tate Family

Four Generations of Growth

In 1953, Stanley “Bill” Tate and his son Tom planted ten thousand Norway pine, Scotch pine, and White pine trees on ten acres of farmland in Adams County, Wisconsin. Tate’s Tree Company was born.
Father and son began selling the trees as Christmas trees from Adams and Wood counties and, as the Tate’s reputation grew, so did their offerings. They leased additional land in Waupaca and began planting White spruce and Balsam fir. For the first twenty or so years Tom and his father sold wholesale only from Wisconsin to Texas. And the Tate family’s trees began to show up in Christmas tree lots across the Midwest and South.

By the time Stanley passed away in 1976, Tate’s Tree Company was selling thirty thousand Christmas trees every year and planting another forty thousand more on lands throughout central and southern Wisconsin. Tom, now a full-time educator, counselor, and administrator in the Sun Prairie school district, ran the Tate’s Tree Company on the side, recruiting his own son, Bill, into the business as soon as Bill could hold a rake. Bill began shearing trees after school when he was twelve and took over the reins of the company in 1996.
Bill’s own sons, Brenin and Jace, work alongside their dad today. Brenin joined the company fulltime in 2008, and Jace works at Tate’s Tree Company part-time after school. While Bill loves his work so much that he doesn’t see himself ever retiring, he hopes that his sons will eventually take on the family business and continue to foster its growth.

Tates Tree Company Today

Today, Tate’s Tree Company grows top-quality trees on farms in Sun Prairie, Pine River, and Hancock, Wisconsin covering over 450 acres.
Bill Tate has grown his family’s business into a year-round enterprise, adding nursery stock to the Christmas tree lines in 2000. Landscaping companies and garden retailers from around Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Minnesota and along the East Coast call on Tate’s for its selection of hearty, healthy, mature evergreens and hardwoods.
In 2008, Bill decided to begin offering nursery stock to homeowners, making it possible for families to purchase the freshest, highest quality trees possible directly from the nursery at great prices and with an unbeatable guarantee.
